Season 16 of The Joy of Painting aired on many PBS stations in 1988. It was the first season to have the "Cartoon Bob" opening and closing sequences, which would remain in use until Season 19. The font for the colors running across the screen were changed to Optima, which remained in use until the show's ending in 1994. The opening credits have changed to feature a cartoon version of Bob Ross, with a brush in his hand, a projector, and a paint can. He walks over, and touches the projector with a paintbrush. A squirrel pops in, and Bob splashes the paint on a projector, which reveals the day's painting. The closing version is the same as the opening, and shows a cartoon version of Bob Ross, with a brush in his hand, a squirrel, and a projector featuring the day's painting. The credits roll over a shot of the day's painting, and then, Bob closes the painting with a projector, and the squirrel ran away, and an eagle flies on a projector. He flips the brush, and lands on his head.
